Happy Day of Creation!

If you ascribe to the literal interpretation of the events in the Bible, then today you may be interested in celebrating the Birthday of the Universe, which is, according to Archbishop James Ussher, either 6011 or 6012 years old (depending on whether you count “0″ as a year). That’s right, using the scrupulous methodology now referred to by Serious Biblical Exegetes as “Guesstimation,” the good Anglican Archbishop calculated the precise date of the creation of the Universe as October 22, 4004 B.C.

According to the latest estimates, His Excellency Ussher was, of course, off by about 13.7 billion years, give or take a few million. Really, though, what’s a few billion, give or take, when measured against eternity?

The funny thing is, this is the same logic used in certain *ahem* “circles” to calculate an end-date for the cosmos of December 22, 2012. Where’s the equal opportunity ridicule, people?
