The even more amusing thing is that I'm pretty certain the whole Giant itself is a joke and not an ancient fertility symbol as some pagans would like to believe. It's only recorded from the 17th century onwards and it's situated right next to an old monastery site. I can't believe that a massive club wielding phallus on legs sat on the hillside with no mention until the 1600's.

old farmer "verily upon yonder hillside I havest just realised that those rude chalk markings look just like a man waving his John Thomas in the breeze".

My first reaction was if it's so offensive why not just go and clean it up instead of grand pronouncements about "rain magic"?
Also my Chaos Magick background thinks that perhaps Homer is a strong enough cultural archetype to deserve his own hillside chalk-mark.

But yes...humourless is the word for it.
